Colonic Irrigation

What is Colonic Irrigation?

Colonic irrigation, also known as colon hydrotherapy, is one of the most common methods of colon cleansing. Colonic irrigation is the process of removing faeces from the large intestine, or colon, with liquids. This is usually done as a routine to clean the colon, prior to surgery of the colon or a colonoscopy.

The process involves water or other special liquids being injected into the colon with the purpose of cleaning the colon. A small tube that will carry the liquids is inserted into the rectum carefully to not cause pain; once the tube is placed in the rectum, the therapist will slowly turn on the tubing system for water or liquid to flow into the colon. The liquid is warm and purified, while the tubing is disposable and never used for more than one session. Once you feel full, the flow of the liquid will be reversed to evacuate all waste from the colon and the process will begin again for the duration of the session.

During the session, the therapist may massage your abdomen gently to encourage the release of waste that may remain attached to the walls of the colon. This also generally helps with cramping and discomfort.

Colon irrigation is a painless procedure that can be calm and relaxing. In some occasions, patients may experience cramping and slight discomfort as the colon contracts to expel waste or in case of an obstruction in the colon; once the obstruction is removed, the session will continue without cramps or discomfort.

Our team of professionals at Aqualibria are trained to make the session as comfortable as possible for all patients, whether it’s your first session or if you are a regular patient. All sessions are done in a clean and private environment, so that you can relax.

Preparing for a Colonic Irrigation

It is recommended that prior to a colonic irrigation session, patients refrain themselves from drinking or consuming food to avoid side-effects such as nausea, dizziness and headaches. It is not necessary to fast prior to your session, but a it is recommended to make a few dietary adjustments to enhance the results of your colonic irrigation session.
